Our Certifications: What FSC, GREENGUARD Gold, ISO and ATFA Mean for You

Sustainable flooring is full of claims. Natural, eco-friendly, healthy, low-emission. Most of it is unverified, and none of it is standardised, which makes it hard to compare one product against another with any confidence.

Certification is the part that can be checked. It means an independent body has assessed something against a published standard and issued a certificate that can be verified. This page explains the certifications and memberships behind Portugal Cork Co and the products we supply, what each one actually covers, and what it does not, so you can judge for yourself.

Why Certifications Matter When Choosing Flooring

Flooring covers more surface area than almost anything else in a building. It sits in contact with the air you breathe, it stays in place for decades, and for commercial and institutional projects it often has to satisfy documented requirements before it can be specified at all.

Certifications answer three different questions. Where did the material come from? What does it release into the room once installed? And is the company behind it run to a documented standard? No single certificate answers all three, which is why the credentials below cover different ground.

FSC: Responsibly Sourced Cork

What it is. FSC stands for the Forest Stewardship Council, an international non-profit that sets standards for responsible forest management. FSC certification covers both how a forest is managed and how certified material is tracked through the supply chain.

What it means for you. Our products are made from FSC-certified cork, sourced from forests managed to the FSC standard, where biodiversity, local communities and long-term forest health are prioritised.

Cork is unusual here. The bark is stripped from the living tree roughly every nine years and regrows, so no trees are felled to produce it.

What it does not cover. FSC is about sourcing and supply chain, not indoor air quality or product performance. A material can be responsibly sourced and still be high-emission or poorly made. That is what the other certifications are for.

GREENGUARD Gold: Certified for Low Chemical Emissions

What it is. GREENGUARD Gold is an indoor air quality certification administered by UL Solutions. Products are tested in controlled chamber conditions and must stay within strict limits for chemical emissions, including volatile organic compounds.

Gold is the stricter of the two GREENGUARD levels. Its limits were developed with sensitive occupants in mind, which is why the certification is frequently referenced in specifications for schools and healthcare environments.

What it means for you. Where a product in our range carries GREENGUARD Gold certification, it has been tested and found to stay within those emission limits. For a bedroom, a nursery, a classroom or a consulting room, that is a documented answer to the question of what the floor is releasing into the air, rather than a marketing claim.

What it does not cover. GREENGUARD Gold certifies emissions. It is not a safety rating, a fire rating, or a durability measure, and it does not certify the installation adhesives or coatings unless those products carry their own certification. If low emissions matter for your project, ask us about the full build-up rather than the floor alone.

ISO 9001, 14001 and 45001: Certified Management Systems

What they are. These are three separate international management system standards:

  • ISO 9001 covers quality management: documented processes, consistency, and a system for handling problems when they occur.

  • ISO 14001 covers environmental management: identifying environmental impacts and managing them systematically.

  • ISO 45001 covers occupational health and safety management.

What it means for you. Portugal Cork Co's certifications are issued by Global Compliance Certification, an Australian certification body accredited by JAS-ANZ, the Joint Accreditation System of Australia and New Zealand. Accredited certification means the certifier is itself audited, which is the difference between a meaningful certificate and a logo.

In practice, these standards speak to how we operate rather than to the cork itself. Consistent order handling, documented processes, a managed approach to environmental impact and a safe workplace. For commercial and government work where supplier management systems form part of the tender requirements, they are often a prerequisite.

What it does not cover. ISO certification is about systems, not about product performance or emissions. It says our processes are documented and audited. It says nothing about how a particular tile performs underfoot.

ATFA Membership: Part of the Australian Flooring Industry

What it is. The Australasian Timber Flooring Association is an industry association representing flooring businesses across Australia and New Zealand. It maintains a public register of its members.

What it means for you. Portugal Cork Co is a listed ATFA member, registered as a product supplier, distributor, retailer and wholesaler covering acoustic and commercial flooring. You can confirm our membership yourself on the ATFA member register.

What it does not cover. Membership of an industry body is not a product certification. It is a professional affiliation, and it should be read as one.

100% Recycled Production

Beyond the formal certifications, our production is 100% recycled. Everything is used, and nothing is wasted.

This is not a certified claim in the way FSC or GREENGUARD Gold are, and we describe it as a production characteristic rather than an accredited standard.

What This Means for Your Project

If you are a homeowner. When you are comparing sustainable flooring options, the certifications that matter most are usually FSC, for where the material comes from, and GREENGUARD Gold, for what it releases into the room. If anyone in the house is sensitive to indoor air quality, the second one is the one to ask about by name.

If you are an architect or specifier. We can supply a spec package covering the technical, adhesive, fire and green certificates for the product you are specifying. Our ISO certificates are independently verifiable through the JAS-ANZ register and IAF CertSearch; GREENGUARD certified products can be checked in UL Solutions' product certification database, and our ATFA membership appears on the ATFA member register.

If you are fitting out a commercial space. ISO certified management systems and ATFA membership tend to carry weight in tender and procurement processes, alongside the product level certifications. Tell us what your documentation requirements are, and we will tell you plainly what we can and cannot supply.

Request Documentation for Your Project

If you need certificates, technical data or a spec package, ask, and we will send what applies to the products you are considering. If a certification does not apply to a particular product, we will tell you that too.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Portugal Cork Co's cork FSC certified?

Our products are made from FSC certified cork, sourced from forests managed to the Forest Stewardship Council standard, where biodiversity, local communities and long-term forest health are prioritised. Cork is harvested by stripping bark from living trees roughly every nine years, so no trees are felled in production.

What does GREENGUARD Gold certification mean for cork flooring?

GREENGUARD Gold is an indoor air quality certification administered by UL Solutions. Certified products are chamber tested and must stay within strict limits for chemical emissions, including VOCs. The Gold level uses stricter limits developed with sensitive occupants in mind, which is why it is often specified for schools and healthcare settings. Ask us which products in our range carry it.

Is cork flooring non toxic and low VOC?

The verifiable answer is certification rather than a blanket claim. Our cork is made from 100% natural cork with no nasty additives, and products carrying GREENGUARD Gold certification have been independently tested against strict chemical emission limits. If low emissions are a priority, ask us about the adhesives and coatings as well, since those are separate products with their own specifications.

What certifications should I look for when buying flooring in Australia?

Look for three different things. A sourcing certification such as FSC tells you where the material came from. An indoor air quality certification such as GREENGUARD Gold tells you what it emits once installed. Management system certifications such as ISO 9001, 14001 and 45001 tell you how the supplier operates. For commercial projects, industry membership such as ATFA and a supplier who can produce a documented spec package also matter.

Is Portugal Cork Co an ATFA member?

Yes. Portugal Cork Co is listed on the Australasian Timber Flooring Association member register as a product supplier, distributor, retailer and wholesaler, covering acoustic and commercial flooring. ATFA membership is a professional affiliation rather than a product certification, and it keeps us connected to current Australian technical guidance on installation, subfloor preparation and moisture.

Can I get certificates for a specification or tender?

Yes. We can supply a spec package covering the technical, adhesive, fire and green certificates for the product you are specifying. Our ISO certificates are issued by Global Compliance Certification, a JAS-ANZ accredited Australian certification body, and are independently verifiable through the JAS-ANZ register and IAF CertSearch.
